Balin, Lord of Moria by Tulikoura Balin, Lord of Moria by Tulikoura
"A king he was on carven throne
In many-pillared halls of stone
With golden roof and silver floor,
And runes of power upon the door.
The light of sun and star and moon
In shining lamps of crystal hewn
Undimmed by cloud or shade or night
There shone for ever fair and bright"

Balin has set up his seat in the Chamber of Mazarbul, the Chamber of Records, where the colony gathered gold, relics and knowledge; many runes were carved to the Chamber's walls and the history of Khazad-Dúm was studied. Dwarves explored deeper and further to the Halls, and slowly, mining started. Balin also sent messengers to the Lonely Mountain.

For many years, everything went well and Balin's Kingdom prospered...

...But their presence was not unnoticed; it stirred up the Durin's Bane that lurked in the depths of Moria.

Graphite pencil work, 6 hours. Contrasts etc edited after scanning. My intention was to create a mood of "old, nice memory" with this, as this is the last illustration describing this peaceful time in Moria.

Fifth illustration to my "Balin, Lord of Moria" -serie.

Good to hear if this gives such an impression. Graphite pencil is still relatively odd tool to me, so quality can change.

Incredible art. Well done in expressing a king's power. Great job as well in doing the shading and detailing. Lovely work as always :D Great job!

Ah, good to know this gives some "hints" of king's power.

Graphite pencil is a handy tool, and it's very easy to shade with it. Lighting is so much easier! My way to draw with tablet is somewhat similar to this way of drawing, so I think practising this supports also my poor skill in digital drawing ;).

Thank you for the comment!

Nor do I ;). I gave him a chance to bask in power and honour in this illustration; Balin spend five years there (which is quite long in my opinion), ruling his small kingdom, before he and others perished.

Thank you! Graphite pencil was a bit clumsy with that kind of detailing (runes on the background are just gibberish), but this kind of "sketching" style is always more pleasant if compared to drawing with drawing ink. And a way faster ;)

Oh, nice detail. Good to see a figure up close like this, you get a better feel for the characters and their culture. The throne is especially cool.

Thank you for the comment!

You have some good points here. And surely, closer image gives chances to add some more details. Architecture and "imaginary" designs aren't my strongest points, though. But on the other hand, I also think this throne succeeded well - it was quite fun to draw, as I rarely have an opportunity to draw furnitures ;)

Well, I guess we all have unique styles! You, for example, have very interesting way to use words (and not just random words!) in your art indeed.

And congratulations for the 2nd place in TheLotRClub's competition! Your work was my favourite, btw ;)

Hehe, thank you very much. I think that throne succeeded nicely - these designs (in general) are always tricky, as it's hard to imagine the final result only by looking at sketches. And I can say I had luck with lighting, considering how it still works after scanning and contrast changes :)

I understand, completely. It is very difficult to imagine the final result, sometimes. I am having that problem, right now, with a little sketch I'm doing... of a dwarf, no less :P
