Battle of Nanduhirion, part 3 by Tulikoura Battle of Nanduhirion, part 3 by Tulikoura
The battle of Nanduhirion, part three. Tools used: pencil, graphite pencil and drawing ink.

"... Elsewhere the battle swayed to and fro with great slaughter, until at last the dwarves of the Iron Hills turned the day.

Coming late and fresh to the field the mailed warriors of Náin, Gror's son, drove through the orcs to the very threshold of Moria, crying "Azog! Azog!" as they hewed down with their mattocks all who stood in their way."
______
Last drawing of the year 2009; I meant this to be just a illustration of Náin and few soldiers to the background, but well, now this is a full battle illustration. I made a few compromises with the background, though.

Fifth illustration to my "war of the dwarves and orcs" - serie.

Thank you, glad that you like this one! In this drawing contrast between individuals succeeded better than in previous drawing of the serie.

Thank you! I'm glad that my version satisfies others as well. There aren't too many illustrations regarding dwarven lore so it was nice to try to fill that gap.

Yes, it is bad that the dwarfs are discussed so little. I wish your dwarves would occur in the Hobbit movie! ;)
Will there be more illustrations of the dwarves? Or anything in planning?

I have watched The Hobbit blog, and there was a scene where dwarven soldiers were running around - pretty nice looking scene, although soldiers seemed to wear half-plate armours instead of ringmail (maybe they were Erebor troops from a flashback).

Of course there'll be more drawings, thank you for the interest towards my works. I have a huge pile of sketches, most of them featuring dwarves. Some that I'm planning to draw in near future are related to the battle of five armies - Dáin's troops from Iron Hills, Thorin's assault from the gate and Thorin's farewell to Bilbo, maybe his funeral too. Also some scenes from the Silmarillion, I have barely touched the events in that book.

Oh yeah, right, I remember. I am so excited about Dáin's army in the movie!

I am a really big fan of Tolkien and of dwarfs, at first I thought your drawings by John Howe!^^ Your drawings are exactly my taste!
Oh oooh, that sounds good! I am very pleased to hear that.- You're right, there's still a lot of material.

Well thank you for the interest. When it comes to contest - dunno about that, I haven't really been thinking that possibility.

I have seen people drawing/painting for this War-contest, not just using their older works (WF74 for example, I believe). I see that competition is always a bit more interesting when people have dedicated their works just for that purpose.

But surely there'll be more participants now, when allowing older works.

I meant to draw something when I read about this contest, but because I was busy I simply forgot it.

Cheers, and keep up the quality in LotrClub :)

Oh, I agree with that. Well, truth be told, the point of the contest is to inspire you to make new works, but we dont actually have the luxury of rejecting old entries, so... we have to make a few compromises if we're to have a decent number of entries. Anyway- keep up the good work, sir, I surely wanna see the next entry in those battle scenes you're drawing :D

Well, glad you think that part succeeded. I have tried to make some changes to view angles and to layout, because if I make six drawing one after another using same composition, that could be a bit boring solution.

Thank you for the comment.

I haven't heard about that book (maybe because of its english name) and I'm not an illustrator, at least when it comes to an occupation. Drawing is just a hobby for me.

I would be interested to know to whom you are referring, though :)

I agree, compared to previous work this is much "cleaner" (you could say I might have learnt something from my mistake ;)). Mostly because of backround doesnt mess with the characters, and I believe whiter land gives some contrast too.

Impressive! Personally, I like the minimal background... yes, there is something there, but not much, so that the viewer focuses on the life (and death) in the foreground...

Glad that you like that part, because I was quite unsure if it works - but I like it too, after all... Maybe it also gives some perspective to it, I dont know. But one thing is sure, doing the background with drawing ink would have made a completely different look to this illustration.

Thank you for the comment!

Well thank you very much for the comment! Good to hear this gives somekind of feelings - to me, this was great fun to draw.

This story always aroused strong feelings when I read it, and so it was when I made my best to illustrate it - finally, the climax of this grim war, "payback" time after all these horrible losses...! ;)

Well, that's much said anyways. I dont think I can surprise people with new techniques or flashy styles, but if they like my works (which are looking quite same) I'm flattered indeed. Tolkien's works are really inspiring, I hope I can catch and transmit some of those feelings from his stories.

J! Awesome! These guys are pushing on towards the gates. The way you let us see their backs shows their relentless momentum. Would this be Náin crying 'Azog' in the foreground!? The way the rocks intersect the body of warriors creates a good sense of perspective, adding to the composition.

How many more of this series to go? Can't wait!

We do love our chainmail

Thank you very much for the comment!

I had too many sketches in my mind when I started to draw this, including intensive battle-scenes. But eventually I chose this scenery, which seems to be my "trademark" as my bro keeps telling me (soldiers running away + corpes in the foreground)... Well, next works should be easier to do and a bit different ones; Azog+Náin+Dáin, and one more "ending" illustration after that.

You could guess how I feel after drawing 12 "complete" chainmail armours... phew that was troublesome - I ruined two drawing inks when I drew those! :)

Mountain slope, and fortifications of Moria's eastern gate... or that's what I tried to illustrate ;). I know, it might look odd.

But here's the frontal view if you want to look where I (kinda) aimed at: [link]
