Men of Dor-Lomin, to the death

The fifth battle in the wars of Beleriand, Nírnaeth Arnoediad, as told in J.R.R. Tolkiens Silmarillion. Fourth work and sequel to my previous works, "The battle of unnumbered tears", "The Fall of Azaghál" and "Gothmog Strikes Fingon Down".

"The battle was now thoroughly lost, with Turgon reduced to maintaining a defensive line guarding the entrance to the Pass of Sirion. Húrin and Huor urged Turgon to retreat to Gondolin.

Huor, Húrin and the remaining Men of Dor-lómin formed the rearguard, thus buying time for Turgon to escape with his surviving forces. For they did not wish in their hearts to escape from the Northlands; and if they could not win back their homes, there they would stand to the end. Foot by foot they withdrew, until they came behind the Fen of Serech, and had the stream of Rivil before them. There they stood and gave way no more.

The Men of Dor-lómin indeed fought to the death. Late in the afternoon, The Sun westered and the shadows of the Ered Wethrin grew dark, Huor fell pierced with a venomed arrow in the eye, and all the valiant men of Hador were slain about him in a heap. The Orcs chopped the heads off the bodies and piled them as a mound of gold in the sunset.

Last of all Húrin stood alone."
